JOB TITLE: Facilities Director

DESCRIPTION: 12-month, Full-Time, Exempt

OVERVIEW: Westover School, an independent boarding and day high school in Middlebury, CT, seeks a strong leader and strategic thinker to serve as Facilities Director and lead the dedicated Facilities Department. Reporting to the Chief Financial and Operating Officer (CFOO), the Facilities Director is responsible for overseeing plant services, maintenance, grounds and landscaping, campus security and custodial services, construction, and special projects. The Director will also lead efforts to build and maintain environmentally sustainable practices and procedures in relation to campus infrastructure, upkeep, and expansion. The position is open immediately.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervises and assists all maintenance and custodial personnel.

  • Oversees contracted personnel.

  • Provides input to the development of the annual departmental budget with CFOO.

  • Manages all building management systems including HVAC and fire control systems.

  • Develops and maintains a short and long term vision for action on deferred maintenance.

  • Designs, implements and directs training and safety programs for the department.

  • Maintains inventory of supplies, materials, and equipment needed for maintenance and custodial work.

  • Overseas purchases of building equipment for school buildings and makes recommendations for purchase of necessary equipment and supplies.

  • Coordinates all maintenance and custodial schedules and work routines.

  • Maintains safety records.

  • Organizes and implements a program of preventative maintenance.

  • Conducts routine inspections of buildings for maintenance and custodial services.

  • Supervises and inspects the improvement and renovation work performed by outside contractors, and

  • Verifies terms of all such contracts have been fulfilled before authorizing payment.

  • Advises and/or responds to emergencies on a 24-hour basis, as needed.

PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL SKILLS AND QUALITIES:

  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to motivate, direct, and train facility staff.

  • Customer service focused. 

  • Excellent interpersonal, collaborative, and communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively to all constituencies.

  • Formal education and/or at least five years’ experience in maintenance and facilities management.

  • Prior supervisory experience preferred.
