Role Description:

Westover School seeks a full-time, 10 month Licensed Clinical Social Worker to serve as a School Counselor. A successful candidate will play a vital role in providing a holistic approach to mental health services for students in a boarding school environment that values diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. The School Counselor will also provide counseling to students, assist with referrals to consulting clinicians and outside providers, and coordinate care with the Health Center. The scope of work includes fostering an authentic, compassionate and open campus climate that addresses common emotional health issues through providing resources and training for faculty, staff, and parenting adults. 

This position will report to the Associate Head of School, and work with various constituencies across the school to lead the school’s wellness program. The ideal schedule for this position will be weekdays from 11am-7pm to be available to connect with students outside of class time. In addition, the schedule would flex for one half-day during the week to allow for 3-4 hours on the weekend to be present during weekend residential life hours. The specifics of the weekly schedule can be finalized with the candidate and Associate Head of School during the hiring process.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Associate Head of School, Director of Health Services, and Director of Community Life and Culture to provide developmentally sensitive, comprehensive, and holistic systems and approach to emotional health issues in a girls’-centered residential community. 

  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to getting to know each student, including the ability to build genuine relationships with students across diverse backgrounds.

  • Participate on a Student Support team, identify students who may need targeted or intensive services, and coordinate with behavioral health specialists.

  • Provide individual counseling for students to address mental-health needs, stress-management skills, relationship building and environmental stressors—both on a drop-in basis and as referred by faculty, staff or requested by the family, reflecting the highest standards of ethical considerations, practice, and care.

  • Develop social-emotional support plans for students requiring regular counseling services, utilize a variety of psychologically appropriate interventions, including emergency/crisis response and provide appropriate referrals from developing a large network of providers

  • Coordinate with JED Foundation to develop and implement school-wide group and individual social and emotional support programs. Help all students develop skills in the areas of personal/social growth and promote emotional resilience and mindfulness as necessary qualities for success in school and in life.

  • Maintain confidential records as part of duties and requirements as a licensed social worker, exhibiting professionalism through care in communicating, maintenance of objectivity, and discretion with regard to requirements for confidentiality. 

  •  Available on-call hours when school is in session for crisis intervention and emergency mental health issues with the Administrator on Call and/or Director of Community Life and Culture.

 Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW ) or eligible for licensure

  • Advanced degree in a mental-health-related field (psychology, social work, counseling)

  • 5 years of full-time experience in counseling in an educational or non-profit setting

  • Strong communication and facilitation skills.

  • Working familiarity with student assessment tools, especially in evaluating and interpreting standardized test results.

  • Desire and ability to work with students at the specified age level with diverse backgrounds and levels of ability toward accomplishing their educational goals.

  • Ability to organize tasks and manage time to meet many and varied deadlines and communicate effectively with students, parents, school administrators and other staff, including the ability to discuss topics which may be sensitive.
