Job Summary

The Staff Nurse is a member of Westover’s Health Center team and provides high-quality, compassionate care to students in our boarding and day community. This part-time position supports the health and wellness of all students through clinical care, accurate documentation, and clear communication with the Health Center Director and the Student Life team. The Staff Nurse contributes to a positive, student-centered environment that aligns with Westover’s values of community, respect, and empowerment.

Coverage is needed primarily during high-volume school day hours—Mondays, Fridays, and some Thursday afternoons—with flexibility for additional shifts as needed during the academic year and summer programs.


Responsibilities and Duties

  • Provide clinical nursing care to students in accordance with professional standards and school policies.
  • Support student wellness through assessment, treatment, and follow-up of acute and chronic health conditions.
  • Maintain up-to-date health records, documentation, and compliance with state and school health requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with the Health Center Director, parents/guardians, and other school personnel regarding student care as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with the Student Life team to promote health education and wellness initiatives.
  • Provide coverage during high-volume school days (Mondays, Fridays, and select Thursday afternoons) based on Health Center and student needs.


Required Qualifications

  • Required: Registered Nurse (RN) with current Connecticut license; Preferred: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and experience in school or adolescent health care settings.
  • Strong clinical assessment skills with demonstrated ability to think independently and critically.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a small, student-centered team.
  • Flexibility to provide coverage during the academic year and summer programs as needed.


Working Conditions

  • Work is performed primarily in the on-campus Health Center in a clinical and office environment.
  • The position requires the ability to respond promptly to student health needs and occasional medical emergencies.
  • Regular interaction with students, faculty, staff, and families.
  • May require occasional evening, weekend, or summer hours during peak periods or special programs.
  • Potential exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids, with appropriate protective measures provided.
  • Noise and activity levels may vary depending on campus and student events.


Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods to assist students and move between buildings as needed.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds occasionally (e.g., supplies, medical equipment).
  • Visual and auditory ability to assess student health conditions and respond appropriately.
  • Manual dexterity to operate medical equipment and perform standard nursing procedures.
  • Ability to maintain composure and focus in a fast-paced or emergency environment.
