English Substitute Teacher (Half-Year Appointment)

Job Summary

Westover School seeks an English Substitute Teacher for a half-year appointment to provide continuity of instruction and student support during a faculty leave. The substitute teacher will assume responsibility for existing English courses, maintaining the established curriculum while fostering a classroom environment grounded in clarity, inclusion, and high expectations.

This role includes teaching responsibilities, collaboration with the English Department, communication with families, and participation in the broader faculty community during the term of the appointment.

Responsibilities and Duties

Teaching and Learning

  • Teach assigned English courses using existing curriculum, materials, and pacing guides.
  • Create a classroom environment that supports belonging, respect, and academic engagement
  • Assess student learning regularly and provide timely, meaningful feedback.
  • Maintain accurate grading and communication through the school’s learning platforms.
  • Support students in developing critical reading, analytical thinking, and writing skills.

Student Support and Community Engagement

  • Provide extra help and academic support to students as needed.
  • Communicate professionally with families regarding student progress.
  • Participate in school events and community activities during the appointment period.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with English Department colleagues to ensure instructional continuity.
  • Attend faculty meetings and required school functions during the term.
  • Uphold school policies, community standards, and professional expectations.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree required; degree in English, Literature, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience teaching English or working with adolescents in an educational setting.
  • Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive practices.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in classrooms and throughout campus. This is a temporary role requiring a consistent daytime presence and participation in faculty responsibilities during the school term.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to move throughout campus and stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to work at a computer and communicate in person and electronically.
  • Ability to lift or move up to approximately 25 pounds.

Compensation and Benefits

This is a full-time, temporary faculty position for approximately five months. Compensation is commensurate with experience and prorated according to Westover’s faculty salary scale for the duration of the appointment.
